Student Profiles

Iyun Adebowale
IUPUI
Ms. Adebowale was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, she is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. She is working in a Forensics Lab with Dr. Manicke on research that focuses on developing new ways of applying mass spectrometry to difficult problems and on analyzing biofluids by paper spray mass spectrometry. Ms. Adebowale also tutors Chemistry 101 and 105 students at the Chemistry Resource Center (CRC) and at North Hall. After she graduates, she plans to go to medical school.
Bea Aidoo
IUPUI
Ms. Aidoo was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, she is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She is working with Dr. Roper in his research lab focusing on Down Syndrome. The research entails the cognitive and bone aspects of individuals with Down Syndrome and identifying the best method of treatment. Ms. Aidoo has also been a Chemistry Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) leader for two semesters. She usually leads a team of 8-10 students to work through chemistry problems. She also tutored general chemistry students at the Chemistry Resource Center. After she graduates, she plans to enter medical school and later specialize in psychiatry.
Kalee Coe-White
IUPUI
Ms. Coe-White was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, she is seeking an Associate of Applied Science in Biotechnology. She is working with the Indiana Bio Builders to create a bacteriophage that will rid contaminants in water. Ms. Coe-White is also determining how to transform sage into a plant tissue culture for her independent research. Ms. Coe-White works with Professor Racine in the Biology Department as a teaching assistant. After she graduates, she plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology at IUPUI.
Cheikh Ethfagha
IUPUI
Mr. Ethfagha was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, he is seeking a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. Mr. Ethfagha is also determining how to modify genes as a part of his research. Mr. Ethfagha works with a professor in the Chemistry Department as a lab assistant. After he graduates, he plans to pursue medical school to become an oncologist.
Mahussi Fagnon
IUPUI
Ms. Fagnon was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. She is currently a student at IUPUI seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, along with a minor in Chemistry and Spanish. She tutors chemistry as part of the LSAMP L1 Scholars program. For the summer research program, she will be working with her mentor to build artificial blood clots and analyze clotting parameters to better understand Pulmonary Embolism and the different ways to target and get rid of blood clots. After she graduates, she plans to attend medical school.
Crystal Johnson
IUPUI
Mrs. Johnson was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, she is seeking an Associate of Applied Science degree in Biotechnology. She is currently a learning assistant and tutor for Biology 105 at the Ivy Tech Lawrence campus. As a learning assistant she will be conducting weekly experiments in the biology lab. She worked on indirect and capture ELISA assays for an independent project in a protein purification course. After she graduates, she plans to pursue her Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology at IUPUI.
Emmanuel Makanjuola
IUPUI
Mr. Makanjuola was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2017. Currently, he is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry with minors in Biology and Africana Studies. Mr. Makanjuola is a member of the African Student Association, Norman Brown Diversity and Leadership Scholars Program, Biology Club, Olaniyan Scholars Program, Student Soccer Association, Alpha Lambda Delta/Phi Eta Sigma, Chi Alpha Epsilon, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He also serves as Public Relations Officer for the Chemistry Club. Mr. Makanjuola is completing an internship as a part of the LHSI program. He is also a Research Assistant for the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the IU School of Medicine. When he graduates, he hopes to attend medical school.
Carlos Montalvo-Hernandez
IUPUI
Mr. Montalvo-Hernandez was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, he is striving for a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. He is working with Dr. Shunning, a statistics professor at IUPUI, to develop a way to modularize and compact the size of pothole "fix" machines. After completing the 8-week research project Mr. Montalvo-Hernandez hopes to continue his research throughout the summer to create and really develop a commercialized product to fix the pothole issue. Upon graduation he hopes to begin a career in Electrical Engineering Technology.
Lionnel Nkurunziza
IUPUI
Mr. Nkurunziza was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. He is currently seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience with a minor in Psychology. He has worked as a PLTL mentor for Chemistry 105 and will be a tutor for LSAMP at the North Hall Tutoring Center. Mr. Nkurunziza is also a part of IUPUI's Neuroscience Club and African Students Association. He intends to pursue a Master's degree in Neuroscience and potentially go on to professional school after he graduates.
Celia Ochoa
IUPUI
Ms. Ochoa was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, she is seeking a dual Bachelor of Science/Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering, focusing on instrumentation and neural engineering with minors in Mathematics and Chemistry. She is currently a math tutor at the Math Assistance Center (MAC) at the C1-Level, which support the first calculus courses. She also tutors calculus at North Hall, as well as math, science, English, and Spanish with Upward Bound. Ms. Ochoa is also a research assistant for IUSM Dept Emergency Medicine. She attended the 2018 Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM, earned the IUURC Top 3 Best Undergraduate IUPUI Poster and the SACNAS Conference Poster Presenter Invitation, and presented at LSCME. She was a part of the 2018 DiVERGE Program at The Scripps Research Institute, is secretary for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and treasurer for the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science. When she graduates, Ms. Ochoa hopes to get her Masters and PhD in BME, work in the industry, or go into research for academia as a professor exploring drug and substance abuse effects or developing solutions to reverse the effects of Alzheimer's disease.
TyLynn Roberts
IUPUI
Ms. Roberts was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018.  Currently, she is seeking an Bachelor of Science in Biology.  She is working with Dr. Roper researching the cognitive development involved with Down Syndrome. Ms. Roberts is also determining the sexual differences between male and female cognition in her independent research.  After she graduates, she plans to pursue a career in a genetics research laboratory.
Pedro Sanchez Cisnero
IUPUI
Mr. Sanchez was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, he is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. As an LSAMP scholar, he is working with Dr. Minto and Dr. Blacklock in their biochemistry lab at IUPUI modeling plant protein structure. After he graduates, he plans to attend the IU School of Medicine. 
Sinai Valdez
IUPUI
Ms. Valdez was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, she is seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. She is working with Dr. Lilian I. Plotkin studying osteoclast recruitment and apoptosis. Ms. Valdez is also working with gap junctions within osteoclasts and researching the part it plays in cell to cell communication. Ms. Valdez is also working alongside a PhD student in the cell anatomy department who will also overlook her research. After she graduates, she plans to pursue a career at the IU School of Medicine.
Brooklyn Williams
IUPUI
Ms. Williams was selected as an IN LSAMP Summer Research Scholar in 2018. Currently, she is seeking a Bachelors of Science in Biology. She is working in Dr. Perrin's research lab, to determine how hair cells lead to adult-onset deafness. Ms.Williams also volunteers in the emergency room at IU Methodist Hospital. After she graduates, she plans to pursue a PhD degree at IUPUI.
