High Impact Practices (HIPs)

IUPUI provides several other programs that will be available for LSAMP students and enhance their college experience.

Degree Mapping

Degree maps, also known as curriculum maps, have proven successful in helping college students to graduate on time. LSAMP students will have advisor support in mapping out their specific sequence of courses . The maps can be used as effective tools to facilitate student recruitment and advising, enhance student-program fit, support efficient student progression throughout the curriculum, and ensure timely graduation. At IUPUI, this degree mapping is done through an online tool called iGPS.

Freshman Orientation

Orientation is designed to prepare students for achieving their goals at IUPUI. Incoming students will have the chance to meet with knowledgeable leaders who will guide them through the orientation process, as well as experience housing and residential life during their overnight stay. The orientation program will help students discover and learn about the many resources that IUPUI has to offer. The on-campus time will also include meeting with an academic advisor, registering for classes, and learning about everything important for the first semester.

Learning Communities

At IUPUI, first-year seminars facilitate student transition to college by introducing key information and skills needed to succeed and by offering opportunities to connect with faculty, staff, and other students. First-year seminars are taught by an instructional team (faculty member, student mentor, and academic advisor) and are often linked with other entry-level courses (e.g., writing, speech, or math) to form learning communities in which faculty may collaborate in creating class assignments. IUPUI also offers themed learning communities, which engage a cohort of 25 students in three to five shared courses organized around an interdisciplinary theme.

Math Tutoring

The Math Assistance Center (MAC) and MAC for Statistics (MAC Stat) provide a place for collaboration with peers on math assignments. Students are employed as tutors and mentors so that the space is inviting and encourages peer learning.

Summer Bridge

The transition from high school to college or university is difficult for many students, and the Summer Bridge program, run by the IUPUI University College, will orient them to the campus and minority community. This eight-day summer program features workshops to expose students to daily college life, study skills and social development. Again, if you are LSAMP eligible, your program fee may be paid for by the IN LSAMP grant funds.
