Building Partnerships to Connect IN LSAMP Scholars

Building partnerships starts with connecting people. To strengthen collaborations between Florida Georgia LSAMP at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) and IN LSAMP at IU Northwest, Director, Dr. Bhaskara Kopparty, visited FGCU on March 2, 2020 to discuss various STEM activities that can be created for the IN LSAMP Summer STEM Camp for high school students at IU Northwest. The goal of the visit was to explore new ways to encourage underrepresented minority students (URM) to pursue programs in STEM fields through LSAMP partnerships across the country.

Dr. Kopparty met with the Director of Florida Georgia LSAMP at FGCU Dr. Claude Villiers. He also met and held discussions with Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Tony Barringer, and Dr. Vivek Bhargava, Professor of Finance and Associate Dean of Faculty & Administration in the Lutgert College of Business at FGCU. All of them shared their experiences about STEM activities at FGCU and southwest Florida.

“This will open the doors for students from IN LSAMP at IUN to collaborate and interact with Florida Georgia LSAMP students from FGCU.”

Dr. Bhaskara Kopparty

Dr. Kopparty shared how IN LSAMP at IU Northwest actively engages with high school students with a STEM summer camp. “The Summer STEM CAMP at IU Northwest gives a hands on experience and immersion in STEM activities for High School students in the region, with a focus on underrepresented minority students.”

This year the camp will run from August 3 to August 5 , 2020.

IN LSAMP looks forward to a sustaining connection with Florida Georgia LSAMP through invitations extended to students to participate in the IN LSAMP Annual Research Conference.
