IN LSAMP Scholars Nominated to Attend 2022 CalTech Future Ignited Conference

One of the IN LSAMP program’s strategies is to prepare students for graduate programs and careers in STEM by supporting their career development through attendance at conferences and workshops. The 2022 CalTech FUTURE Ignited Conference, hosted virtually on October 8, 2022, is an attendance by nomination conference inviting scholars with an interest in pursuing a PhD program to learn about graduate school preparation and network. “The goal of FUTURE Ignited is to diversify STEM and to support the aspiring young scientists who identity as students of color, and their allies” (California Institute of Technology, 2022). Several IN LSAMP scholars were nominated by a faculty mentor or advisor to attend and four were selected to participate in this one-day event.

The virtual conference program featured a graduate student panel, networking opportunity, workshops focusing on topics such as graduate school funding and authoring personal statements, as well as breakout sessions by STEM academic discipline. Maria Jaimes, a 2021 IU Bloomington LSAMP research scholar, was nominated to attend this opportunity. Read Maria’s reflection on her conference experience and plans after graduation:

Reflecting on your experience at this one-day virtual conference, what did you learn?

“…I learned many useful tips about navigating the graduate school application process and life as a graduate student.”

What are your plans after graduation?

“I am still exploring my options after graduation. I would like to get some work experience first before going to grad school.”

How will your attendance at this conference aid in your plans after graduation?

“After attending this virtual conference, I realize that the world of STEM and research builds on the knowledge of many interdisciplinary fields. This creates room for plenty of opportunities in this field and I can’t wait to dive into it!”

Maria Jaimes,

Assessment Institute in Indianapolis

The Assessment Institute in Indianapolis is the nation's oldest and largest event focused exclusively on outcomes assessment in higher education. We anticipate that some 1000 educators from virtually every state and several other countries will take part in the 2018 Institute.

The Assessment Institute in Indianapolis is designed to provide opportunities for (1) individuals and campus teams new to outcomes assessment to acquire fundamental knowledge about the field, (2) individuals who have worked as leaders in outcomes assessment to share and extend their knowledge and skills, and (3) those interested in outcomes assessment at any level to establish networks that serve as sources of support and expertise beyond the dates of the Institute.
