The Indiana STEM LSAMP was pleased to host a pre-conference workshop on Friday, October 25, from 11:00am – 5:00pm on day one of the Building a Diverse STEM Talent Pool: Classrooms to Careers.
The hands-on workshop sessions were specifically designed for LSAMP administrators currently managing projects that are a Phase I or II award. Attendees had a basic knowledge of NSF LSAMP terminology and WebAMP.
Program
11:15 am – 1:00 pm Alliance to Alliance: Shared Best Practices
Panel Presenters: Nicole Campos (CSU-LSAMP), Gail Coover (WiscAMP), Eda Davis-Lowe (Central Florida STEM alliance), Tamara Hamilton (Upstate LSAMP), Brenda Morales (OK LSAMP), & Fara Williams (KY-WV LSAMP)
This workshop provided strategies, roundtable discussion, and interactive activities for personnel managing day-to-day operations of a LSAMP Alliance. Presenters each share 1-2 topics of expertise with the audience and then break into small work groups to examine these strategies through discussion. Each participant generated an action plan and locate resources to assist with implementing strategies.
Goal
- Gain a deeper understanding of LSAMP components
- Make connections between LSAMP alliances
- Develop an action plan of strategies and resources

1:15 – 2:45 pm Alliance Management: Methodologies to Manage Complex Initiatives
Presenter: Gary Maixner
In this workshop, participants explored the basic concepts of project management, including definitions, methodologies, and tools. An introduction to Bonfire Methodology, a brief demo of a work breakdown structure tool and walkthrough will be provided. After the presentation, participants will spend time working together to write project charters for projects at their alliance. Participants should bring a device to help with the exercise and an idea of a complex project they wish to work on.
Goal
- Identify opportunities for applying solutions to breakdown large projects into manageable components
- Identify techniques that enhance collaborative work among teams working on complex initiatives
- Develop strategies that create buy-in among virtual teams

3:00 pm WebAMP: Collaborating to Create Processes to Improve Consistency in Data Collection
Presenters: Andrea Ingle & TBA
This workshop covered WebAMP data collection requirements. Reports will be shared with the group on how IU is tracking LSAMP students and their outcomes. Then lead Q&A on ways collaboration with institutional data offices can generate reports that improve consistency and data collection over the life of an award.
Goal
- Review job aids created to increase accuracy in data reporting for WebAMP across institutions
- Discuss what reports institutions are creating in order to track LSAMP students and outcomes
- Identify opportunities for sharing collaborative work at the institution level

5:00 – 6:00 pm LSAMP Program Poster Session Clearwater Hallway
Attendees from the NSF-funded program attending the Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence (LSMRCE) Annual Conference was invited to present a poster at the pre-conference evening poster session. The goal of the poster session is to allow grantees to informally present their work to their peers and to promote additional networking and exchange across the Alliances. We invite creative posters that best present the scope of the project and invite discussion around the goals, outcomes and participants of the project.
